You should have created a backup of your site to restore it when something goes wrong. There are many chances that you lose your database for that purpose you should have a backup of your database. It is better to have daily backups of your database as you will have the most recent database when you will restore it.

However another change of disappearing the upload directory path from Settings, and the ways to restore it, has been the topic of recent discussions.
